BIO:
Hello! My name is Vanessa and I have been working in the veterinary industry for over 14 years. I am a practicing veterinary technician and I do dog trainer & behaviour modification. Working closely with dogs and cats sparked an early interest in learning as much as I could about animal behaviour.
After working a short time at my first clinic, I realized that working with animals was my calling. I went to school and received my Animal Care diploma at Sheridan College with honours. I have continued building my knowledge by completing the Small Animal Behaviour certification through University of Guelph and have also earned my Fear Free certification which allows me to help my patients have a better experience in clinic and teach pet parents and fosters to help their dogs live fear free. After wanting to pursue a behaviour focused career, I received my full certification for training with the Animal Behaviour College.
Using positive reinforcement, redirection, enrichment and exercise, you too will learn to be the human your dog needs! Our understanding of dog behaviour is always evolving and I strive to ensure that my knowledge is current and science-based. I am committed to continue growing my education in behaviour modification with a particular interest in problem behaviours such as anxiety, high energy and reactivity.
TOPIC: Dog Basics: Understanding Dog Language
In this lecture, you will learn to read a dog's body language, interpret why your dog behaves a certain way and key points on how to maintain good habits or change unwanted ones. The way you react to your dog's behaviour, interact with your dog and how you expose them to different surroundings and stimuli will dictate how your dog feels about them and reacts towards them. Is your dog very fearful of sounds or sights? Is your dog glued to your hip? Does your dog choose unwanted behaviours such as chewing, barking or eliminating themselves on your floor? Foster dogs will most likely exhibit one, some, all or more of the listed behaviours as they are going through a lot of change. By supporting these foster dogs and teaching them confidence on how to live in a new environment is the key to finding them their fur-ever home!
Topics of discussion include:
- Dog body language: Reading and interpreting your dog's language from nose to tail
- Dog behaviour: what motivates behaviours, how your dog thinks, finding a motivator to change behaviours and effectively communicate with your dog (behaviour modification)
- Brining a new foster home: introduction to the new home and family members, the first 24 hrs, the decompression period, positive exposure, preventing unwanted behaviours
-Q & A (Please submit questions when you register or limited choices at the event)
